Takuya Niwa is a fifth-generation futon craftsman at Niwa Futon Shop in Nagoya, Japan.
For generations in Japan, futons have been made by hand using layers of cotton. This traditional method creates a natural balance of softness, breathability, and support for the body.
At Niwa Futon Shop, each futon is made through a careful process of layering cotton, shaping it by hand, and stitching it with precision. Rather than producing identical products, every piece is adjusted according to the materials, climate, and the person who will use it.
Through this work, Takuya Niwa continues the tradition of handmade futons while exploring new possibilities for rest and comfort.
Recognition
Takuya Niwa has been recognized for his dedication to traditional craftsmanship in Japan.
He is a recipient of the Medal with Yellow Ribbon, an honor awarded by the Japanese government to individuals who have become public role models through diligence and excellence in their professions.
He has also been designated as a Contemporary Master Craftsman, a title awarded by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to outstanding skilled artisans in Japan.
Takuya Niwa is a First-Class Certified Bedding Manufacturing Technician and the winner of the National Skills Grand Prix in futon making, one of Japan's highest competitions for master craftsmen.
