Through a careful sequence of layering, shaping, and stitching by hand, the cotton is transformed into a form that supports the body while remaining soft and breathable.
This process has remained unchanged for generations, passed down at Niwa Futon Shop from craftsman to craftsman.
The Material
Only raw, unbleached cotton is used, chosen by hand for its length and resilience.
The quality of the cotton determines the elasticity and breathability of the finished futon, so each batch is carefully inspected before use.
Layering by Hand
The cotton is layered in thin, even sheets, built up gradually to create a natural balance of softness and support.
Each layer is adjusted by hand according to the season, the climate, and the person who will use the futon.
Shaping & Stitching
Once layered, the cotton is shaped by hand into its final form.
Precise stitching secures each layer in place, keeping the futon's shape stable through years of daily use.
This last step is where decades of experience are most visible — a balance of pressure, rhythm, and touch that cannot be rushed.
