Each cushion tailored by hand, one at a time, with our own cotton blend. Linen that deepens in character with use, and a quiet presence — that is its appeal.

ZEN ZABUTON in daily use

A cushion to steady the breath and quiet the mind. In the act of sitting, it gently supports a moment of settling in and turning inward.

ZEN Zabuton and Zafu were designed first for the stability of zazen — a base that holds the body still through a long sitting. But their use is not limited to the meditation mat. As a reading seat, a place to take tea, an extra cushion for guests, or simply a quiet spot to sit at home, they settle easily into daily life.

ZEN ZABUTON as a reading seat

ZEN ZABUTON

Seated in stillness, zazen posture

The zabuton was once an everyday part of life on tatami. Not reserved for special occasions alone, it is meant to sit alongside daily life — bring it into quiet, everyday moments of rest as well.

ZEN ZABUTON begins where the futon begins — with the selection and blending of raw cotton, layered by hand to a ratio developed over five generations.

Cottons of differing fibre length and hardness are combined so the cushion holds its shape under weight, yet keeps a gentle give at the surface.

Each cushion is finished with a hand-sewn seam and settles into daily use without losing its posture.

The filling is a fine cotton, blended and processed to our own formula, and each cushion is finished by hand, one at a time.

ZAFU

ZAFU in use, seated posture

ZAFU carries the same cotton, the same hands, the same century-and-a-half of technique as ZEN ZABUTON — brought down to a smaller, more compact form.

Built at 41 × 31 cm, it sits on top of the larger cushion as a companion piece: a smaller seat, a footrest, or an accent within the room.

The same layering of raw cotton and the same hand-sewn seam carry through, just at a different scale.

Craftsmanship

From raw cotton to finished seam, nothing is machine-made. Every motion is done by hand.

Preparing the cotton
01

Cotton

Raw cotton is fluffed and blended by hand, to a ratio developed over five generations, before it is layered into the cushion.

Shaping the cotton by hand
02

Shaping

The layered cotton is shaped by hand — pressed, folded and drawn into form the way a sculptor builds a shape — until the cushion holds an even, balanced body.

Closing the seam by hand
03

Closing

The final seam is drawn closed by hand, under an even, deliberate pressure that settles the cushion into its finished form.

Finishing the cushion by hand
04

Finishing

Each cushion is shaped and checked by hand a last time, so it holds its posture from the very first day of use.

Care

With regular sun airing, the loft and softness are restored, so the cushion can be enjoyed for years to come.
